Every year, the weeks before Diwali bring the biggest demand spike for edible oil, ghee and related liquid products. Households stock up for festive cooking, sweet shops increase production, and corporate gifting pushes demand for premium tins and jars. For manufacturers, this is the most profitable season, but only if the packaging line keeps up.
Where lines usually fail
The problem is rarely raw material. It’s the packaging line. Semi-automatic machines that handle normal demand become a bottleneck when orders double. Frequent changeovers between 1-litre bottles, 5-litre jars and 15-kg tins eat into production time. Worn nozzles cause dripping and product loss. Under pressure, filling accuracy slips, and under-filled packs create Legal Metrology risk, while over-filled packs quietly drain your margins.
A pre-festive checklist
Before the rush begins, every plant manager should review a few basics:
- Nozzles and seals: Replace worn parts now to prevent drips, foaming and contamination.
- Calibration: Recheck volumetric and weighmetric filling accuracy for every pack size you plan to run.
- Changeover planning: Group similar pack sizes together in your production schedule to reduce downtime.
- Capping and induction sealing: A leaking cap during transport means returns and lost trust. Test seal integrity across batches.
- Labeling: Festive and gifting SKUs often use special labels. Make sure your labeling machine is set up and tested in advance.
- Spare parts: Keep critical spares in stock. Waiting for parts during peak season can cost days of output.
When to upgrade instead of repair
If your team is running extra shifts every festive season and still missing dispatch targets, it may be time to move from semi-automatic to fully automatic filling. A PLC-based automatic line combines filling, capping, sealing and labeling into one continuous flow, cutting manual handling and keeping accuracy consistent even at high speed. Weighmetric fillers suit heavier tins and jars, while piston or volumetric fillers work well for bottles, so the right machine depends on your product mix.
