In 2026, food labelling in India has moved from a back-office formality to a front-line business priority. FSSAI notified the Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) First Amendment Regulations, 2026 on March 24, 2026, amending the existing 2020 labelling regulations. The amendment aims to simplify certain labelling requirements while improving clarity and traceability, and it strengthens traceability requirements for non-retail containers.
Enforcement is getting stricter
The regulator has emerged as one of the most consequential watchdogs for the consumer goods industry this year, targeting claims such as “100 per cent” purity on food labels. The message is clear: every label must be accurate, and every pack must be traceable.
What about edible oil?
Under the proposed front-of-pack warning labels, inherently high-fat products such as ghee and edible oil would be exempt, subject to other applicable requirements. That doesn’t mean oil packers can relax. Mandatory declarations, batch details, dates, FSSAI licence number and correct net quantity still need to appear clearly and consistently on every container, whether it’s a 500 ml bottle or a bulk tin.
Why manual labeling is a compliance risk
Hand-applied labels often end up crooked, misplaced or missing on some containers. Mix-ups happen when multiple SKUs run on the same day. During audits or recalls, poor batch records make it hard to trace which packs went where. At high volumes, even a small error rate can mean thousands of non-compliant packs in the market.
How automation helps
An automatic sticker labeling machine places every label at the same position with consistent accuracy, including front-and-back labeling for bottles and wrap-around labels for round containers. When integrated into a complete line with filling, capping and induction sealing, labeling becomes part of a controlled process rather than a manual afterthought. Inspection tables and leak testing further ensure that only correctly filled, sealed and labeled packs leave the plant.
Accurate filling matters for compliance too. Weighmetric and volumetric PLC-based fillers keep net quantity consistent, so the weight declared on your label actually matches what’s in the pack.
